The Westin Dragonara Resort sits on a private peninsula in St Julian's on Malta's main island, tucked between St George's Bay and the heart of St Julian's, close to the Dragonara Casino and a short walk from the Paceville area. It opened in 1997 as the first Westin in Europe and has more than 400 recently renovated rooms and suites, most with sea views and a balcony or terrace, plus a good choice of larger family suites.

For families it is well set up. There are large outdoor freshwater pools, children's splash pools and an outdoor Jacuzzi, a heated indoor pool, a small sandy cove and a private beach, plus tennis courts, a spa and a fitness centre. A Kids Club runs children's activities at the Reef Pool area, while the Bay View pool deck and beach are reserved for hotel guests. Dining is spread across several restaurants and bars, with a number of the bars operating only in summer.

It is a proper luxury five-star property, so it suits couples looking for a smart seafront base as much as families wanting pools and space in one place. We would flag that the location puts you near Paceville's nightlife, which is lively in the evenings, so it is worth thinking about where your room sits if you have young children.
