The Solana Hotel & Spa sits right in the middle of Mellieha, a hilltop town in the north of Malta, with a bus stop opposite the door and the long sandy stretch of Mellieha Bay about a ten-minute walk downhill. It is a large four-star hotel, refurbished in 2024, with 241 rooms and studios, some with a kitchenette, and it is set up to take couples and families alike. There are four pools to choose from, including an adults-only rooftop infinity pool with views over Ghadira Bay and the village, plus family pools, an indoor pool and a spa that stays open late.
Beyond the pools you will find a gym, a spa with sauna, several restaurants and snack bars, a rooftop bar and evening entertainment. There is also an indoor children's play room, which is handy on a hot afternoon or a rare rainy day. Parking is available but usually needs to be booked ahead, so it is worth sorting before you travel.
We would put this in the comfortable mid-range bracket. It suits families who want a big-hotel base with plenty on site, and couples who fancy the grown-up rooftop pool, all within easy reach of the beach, the town's restaurants and the northern ferry ports for a day trip to Gozo.
